Celebrating a Remarkable Journey: Aunt Elaine's 50-Year Legacy at Walt Disney World
In 2025, a beloved server at the 50’s Prime Time Cafe at Walt Disney World marked an extraordinary milestone—half a century with the renowned company.
Aunt Elaine Shares Her Heartfelt Story
In a captivating interview with PEOPLE magazine, cast member Elaine West Grimes opened up about her remarkable 50-year journey at Walt Disney World Resort, where she has taken on various roles across numerous locations, most notably at the nostalgic 50’s Prime Time Cafe located within Hollywood Studios.
Grimes embarked on her Disney adventure in 1975 as a cashier at the Contemporary Resort's buffet. As Walt Disney World grew and technology evolved during the 1970s and 1980s, she found herself exploring different positions around the resort. Her career path led her to popular venues such as Whispering Canyon Cafe at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Lodge and Chef Mickey’s at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.
Approximately 25 years ago, Grimes discovered her true calling while serving at the 50’s Prime Time Cafe. This full-service restaurant, which embraces the charm of 1950s Americana, allows cast members to assume family roles and engage playfully with diners, creating a unique dining experience.
At the cafe, Grimes embodies the persona of “Aunt Elaine,” perfectly capturing the heartwarming familial spirit that the restaurant aims to evoke. One of her delightful trademarks is encouraging guests to practice good manners at the table, playfully reminding them to “do your chores,” “set your table,” and “eat all your vegetables.” It is this engaging and genuine interaction that makes her a memorable cast member, prompting many visitors to return for another encounter with her.
Her popularity has sparked the creation of a fan community on Facebook, known as Aunt Elaine’s 50’s Prime Time Family Album, where patrons share photos and cherished stories from their visits with her. Grimes recalls heartwarming moments with guests who have come back after many years, saying, "I had a couple come in that I waited on 20 years ago, and they didn’t think I’d still be working. They sat at my table and they pulled out a picture from 2006 with me and them and then we took a new picture … It’s like you’ve been friends for a long time."
Reaching her 50th anniversary with Disney in 2025, Grimes was honored with a commemorative Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs statue, symbolizing her significant contributions and lasting influence at the resort.
Walt Disney World celebrates traditions like the annual Service Celebration, where long-serving cast members receive recognition and park access alongside their colleagues. This event embodies the family-like atmosphere that Grimes holds dear.
“Service Celebration reminds me why I started and why I’ve stayed,” she expressed to PEOPLE. “These cast members and our guests are like family, and together we keep the magic going.”
This year’s Service Celebration took place on January 27, providing a special occasion for honoring dedicated team members.
