Tour de France 2026: Jasper Philipsen Sprints to Stage 17 Victory | UCI Defends Night Doping Tests (2026)

The 2026 Tour de France has reached its climax, with Belgium's Jasper Philipsen emerging victorious in Stage 17, a thrilling bunch sprint finish. Philipsen's win marks a turning point in his race, after a frustrating three weeks that saw him struggle to match compatriot Tim Merlier in sprint finishes. What makes this win particularly remarkable is the powerful lead-out from his team-mate, the classics legend Mathieu van der Poel, who had previously mis-timed his lead-out, causing Philipsen frustration. This stage also saw the sprinters' last chance to battle on the flat before the final stage in Paris, which has been changed to incorporate a short lapped climb over Montmartre. The stage itself was a rollercoaster, with several riders attempting to break away from the peloton, including current green jersey wearer Mads Pedersen and British rider Josh Tarling. Pedersen retained the green jersey by only seven points over Philipsen, setting up an exciting finale in Paris. The overall battle for the yellow jersey remained quiet, with leader Tadej Pogacar coming home in the peloton nearly nine minutes behind the bunch sprint. Pogacar, 27, of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, sits four minutes and 32 seconds ahead of Belgian star Remco Evenepoel, with Pogacar's Mexican team-mate Isaac del Toro a further one minute and 19 seconds behind in third. Another Briton, Tom Pidcock, also finished in the peloton, but one of Pogacar's key domestiques, Adam Yates, struggled with sickness during the stage after vomiting at the end of Tuesday's time trial, eventually making it over the line more than 26 minutes down. The team will assess whether Yates will continue, with the next three gruelling mountain stages taking place in the Alps. During the stage, the UCI issued a statement defending the night-time anti-doping tests carried out by the International Testing Agency, which has thrown the spotlight back on doping in the sport. Questions have been raised about the timing of these tests, with two-time winner and main rival to Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, tested at two o'clock in the morning and crashing out of the race the following day on a simple right-hand corner. The UCI acknowledged the disruption to riders' rest and recovery but reiterated that night-time testing remains an exceptional measure, reserved for limited and justified circumstances. The UCI will continue to support the ITA in carrying out its mission, in full and complete respect for its independence, in the service of a cleaner and more credible sport of cycling. The stage 17 results saw Philipsen take the win, with Mauro Schmid, Kooij Olav, Lewis Askey, Rick Pluimers, Huub Artz, Clement Russo, and Mads Pedersen finishing in the top 10. The general classification after stage 17 saw Tadej Pogacar maintain his lead, with Remco Evenepoel and Isaac del Toro in second and third respectively. The Tour de France 2026 has been a rollercoaster of emotions, with Philipsen's win providing a much-needed boost for his team and a thrilling finale in Paris on the horizon.
